The Indiana High School Athletic Association has announced that the dead week will be June 29th through July 6th, 2025. Contact will resume on July 7th. Additionally, the Lafayette Jefferson High School Athletic Department has elected to use 5 weekdays for the 2nd Moratorium, those dates are July 11th, July 18th, July 21st, July 25th and July 28th. Scenarios are provided at the bottom for Q&A. During the moratorium week and dates, there is to be NO CONTACT with student-athletes. This includes phone, text, email, and team messaging apps. Students are also to not be at Lafayette Jefferson Athletic Facilities on these dates. These rules are enforced by the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and govern student-athletes, head coaches, assistant coaches, volunteers, and Athletic Administration. Q&A: Q: We have a moratorium date on Friday, July 18th, but we have a lineman challenge on Saturday, July 19th, is that allowed? A: Yes. The 5 individual day moratoriums apply only to Weekdays. Saturday’s would be open all though I’d encourage you to give long 4 day weekends off to your program when possible. Q: We scheduled a team car wash on Monday, July 28th. Are we able to do that? A: No – That is a moratorium day and should be no contact of any kind between coaches and student-athletes Q: Today is July 11th. An assistant coach unlocked the football field so 6 or 7 players could throw the ball around on the field. Coach was (A) in the coaches office during this or (B) standing on the field but not “coaching” A: Both A and B are illegal and would be violations with the IHSAA. In (A) also a problem we have unsupervised kids in our facility (liability). In both scenarios opening the facility for kids to use is also a violation right there. Q: Today is July 25th, while shopping at Walmart, I see 3 of my players in Walmart and they wave at me. Do I need to turn down another aisle and pretend they don’t exist?? A: No, we don’t have to ignore them. Politely wave, but it would be best not to engage in a conversation as we normally would.
